Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of making useful web content easy for search engines and AI assistants to retrieve, understand, verify, and cite. It builds on technical SEO and helpful content; it does not replace them.

AEO matters because buyers increasingly ask a system for an explanation, shortlist, or recommendation before they visit a website. The durable response is not a secret markup trick. It is clear source text, crawlable pages, accurate structured data, consistent entity information, and evidence that a reader can verify.

Does Google require special AI markup?

No. Google’s current guidance for AI features says the same SEO fundamentals remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google does not require a special AI text file or new schema type to appear in those features.

Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet before it can be shown as a supporting link in AI features. That makes the order of operations important:

  1. Make the page crawlable and indexable.
  2. Publish visible, useful content that answers the buyer’s question.
  3. Link the page into the site’s information architecture.
  4. Use structured data only when it accurately describes visible content.
  5. Build real-world corroboration for trust claims.
  6. Measure search and referral activity over time.

A page that fails at the first three steps does not become authoritative because it contains extra JSON-LD.

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO and AEO overlap heavily. SEO establishes the technical and content foundation that lets search systems discover and rank a page. AEO puts extra emphasis on whether an answer can be extracted, understood in context, and traced to credible evidence.

Useful examples include:

  • Organization or LocalBusiness for a real entity with consistent contact and location details;
  • Service for a service described on the page;
  • BlogPosting for an article with accurate publication and modification dates;
  • BreadcrumbList for the visible page hierarchy;
  • FAQPage only where the questions and answers are present on the page and the use case follows the search engine’s current eligibility rules.

Structured data should clarify facts, not invent reviews, awards, locations, authors, or outcomes.

What role do web crawlers play?

AI products do not all use the same crawler or policy. Site owners should review each provider’s current documentation rather than assume one robots rule governs every use.

For example, OpenAI documents separate user agents for search discovery, model training, and user-initiated visits. A site may make different choices for each according to its content policy.

A practical crawler review should include:

  1. robots.txt rules for major search and AI user agents;
  2. XML sitemap availability;
  3. canonical URLs;
  4. response status and redirect behavior;
  5. accidental noindex or authentication barriers;
  6. whether important content appears in the server-delivered HTML;
  7. whether a bot-blocking service is denying wanted crawlers.

llms.txt can serve as a curated resource index for systems that choose to read it, but it is not a replacement for crawlability, internal links, sitemaps, or visible source pages.

How do authority and provenance affect AI citations?

An answer engine needs more than a fluent paragraph. It needs reasons to trust the source and connect the source to a real entity.

Useful authority signals include:

  • a clear company identity and consistent service description;
  • visible authorship or editorial review;
  • publication and material-update dates;
  • direct links to primary sources;
  • case evidence with scope and measurement details;
  • public profiles that consistently identify the company;
  • third-party mentions that corroborate claims;
  • correction and contact paths.

Owned-site improvements can make evidence easier to evaluate, but they cannot manufacture independent prominence. Reviews, directory listings, press coverage, partner references, and observed citations must exist outside the website to count as external corroboration.

What does not work?

Several shortcuts create the appearance of AEO without improving the underlying evidence.

Inventing an AI-only schema type

There is no general-purpose “AEO schema” recognized by Google. Use existing, accurate Schema.org types that match the visible page.

Publishing thin FAQ pages at scale

A large number of shallow answers does not establish expertise. It can create duplication and make the site harder to navigate. Consolidate overlapping questions and make the retained answers specific.

Claiming guaranteed AI citations

Citation and recommendation behavior can vary by query, location, model, retrieval source, freshness, and personalization. No ethical consultant can guarantee that a particular AI system will cite a page for a future query.

Treating schema as proof

Markup is a description supplied by the site owner. Independent evidence still matters for reviews, awards, credentials, locations, and performance claims.

Copying statistics without the original source

A number without provenance is difficult to verify and easy to repeat after it becomes stale. Prefer the primary report, include the publication date, and remove the claim if the source cannot be confirmed.

How should a business measure AEO?

AEO measurement should combine site controls, search visibility, referral behavior, and observed answer-engine results.

Track:

  • indexed pages and crawl errors;
  • non-branded search impressions and clicks;
  • visits from AI and answer-engine referrers when identifiable;
  • conversions assisted by research content;
  • citations or mentions from a documented query set;
  • changes to the sources cited for those queries;
  • entity consistency across owned and external profiles;
  • publication age and review status for high-value pages.

For observed AI results, record the query, system, date, location or market, and whether the result was signed in. Treat the observation as a snapshot, not a permanent ranking.

A practical AEO checklist

Use this order:

  1. Technical access: Confirm that important pages return successful responses, are indexable, appear in the sitemap, and have stable canonical URLs.
  2. Information architecture: Give each revenue page a clear purpose and link it from relevant navigation, service, location, proof, and article pages.
  3. Answer quality: Put direct answers near their questions and add operational detail, limits, and next steps.
  4. Evidence: Cite primary sources, label observations, and provide proof that matches the claim.
  5. Entity consistency: Keep the company name, services, location, contact details, and public profiles consistent.
  6. Structured data: Mark up only the content visible on the page.
  7. Crawler policy: Decide which search and AI crawlers may access the site and document the decision.
  8. Measurement: Monitor indexed visibility, referrals, conversions, and a repeatable AI-query set.
  9. Editorial review: Re-check time-sensitive guidance and remove claims that no longer have current support.

The durable AEO principle

AEO is not a way to trick an AI system into repeating a brand. It is the discipline of publishing answers that are accessible, specific, attributable, and supported well enough to be useful.

Start with the page a buyer needs. Answer the question directly. Show how the answer was established. Link the primary source. Make the company behind the guidance easy to verify. Then measure what search and AI systems actually retrieve.
